Where, What, and Why we bought

October 2011

Upon our return to the US from Australia we started the process of deciding where to live. I wanted a house in a metropolitan area at least as big as Santa Fe and Trox wanted to be near skiing and mountain biking. We looked in Colorado - Durango and Glenwood Springs area just to mention two. In addition we had Idaho and the Salt Lake City area on our list. There were pluses and minuses to everywhere but we finally decided that Salt Lake had the most pluses and the easiest minuses to deal with so we concentrated our search there. Our initial thought was that this would be easy - after all prices are down; foreclosures are up; markets are flooded; etc. WELLLLLL let me tell you, 'twasn't so easy! People that aren't in foreclosure still think their places are worth what they paid for them at the peak and don't want to come down; foreclosures are often trashed; short sales take FOREVER; and so on. BUT we did finally find something. We knew it needed work and that it was dirty. We didn't know HOW much work and HOW dirty. I have bought a number of houses over the years and I've even bought some pretty dirty ones but this one was disgustingly dirty! It is getting cleaner. Here are some pictures of what the place looked like according to the MLS. Of course the dirt can't be seen due to the brown carpet, walls, and floors.

Front yard is well maintained
after all the seller is a land care professional
You can see some of our view in the back ground
it is gorgeous and unblockable
No garage but lots of parking area
so no worries about parking THE RIG
a nice carport and great view
look at those mountains
and oh, yes, did I say the seller was a land care professional
can't tell by the back yard!
brown carpet in the bathroom?
well, that's easy to change
dining area with nice brown tile on
floor and brown wall paper
also open to the kitchen
living room with west facing window
BROWN carpet and oh,yes, BROWN wall paper
are you starting to see a theme here?
this is the basement and we think
this room will be great as an office
window looks east to mountains
this bedroom has access directly to the bathroom
windows look west to the street
more BROWN carpet
wood stove
that'll be nice if we lose power
